Structural Guides & Construction Notes

Three in-depth reference articles covering joint types, load calculations, and on-site raising practices specific to the Polish northern climate.

Fundamentals of Timber Frame Construction

Post & Beam

Vertical posts and horizontal beams form the primary skeleton. Connections rely on joinery rather than fasteners — a defining feature of traditional Nordic and Central European timber construction.

Species Selection

Douglas fir, Scots pine, and Norway spruce are common choices in Poland. Each has different compression and bending properties that affect span lengths and joint sizing.

Snow Load in Poland

Northern Polish regions fall in snow load zones I–III under EN 1991-1-3. Roof pitch and rafter span must account for characteristic ground snow values specific to each zone.

Mortise & Tenon

The mortise-and-tenon is the foundational joint of timber framing — a projecting tenon fits into a matching cavity, transferring shear and bending loads between members.

Infill & Insulation

Nordic-style frames in Poland typically use mineral wool or cellulose infill between timber members, with vapour control membranes on the warm side of the assembly.

Drying & Movement

Green timber shrinks as it dries. Connection design must accommodate dimensional change — slotted holes and wedged tenons are traditional methods of managing this movement.
